This year’s carefully-curated program at Architecture Exchange includes the panel “Excellence in Affordable Housing: Reshaping Urban Environments” with Christopher Gordon (Co-President, KGD Architecture), J.D. Bondurant (Assistant Director of Virginia Housing Development Authority) and Nina Janopaul (President/CEO of Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing). The panel will be moderated by Manoj Dalaya, FAIA. Using case studies in Northern Virginia, the panel will highlight the successful practices and strategies used to address the pressing need for affordable housing in urban environments. The case studies will include projects developed under the new Form Based Code in Arlington County. The developer will describe financial strategies including Low-Income Housing Credits and innovative hybrid financing in affordable developments. Christopher Gordon, AIA NCARB, Principal, KGD Architecture (Architect)
Christopher Gordon has more than 30 years of experience in all facets of architecture, with firsthand experience that extends from urban mixed-used developments to secured corporate facilities. A founding principal of KGD Architecture, he has the ability to envision large, urban developments as well as detailed spaces through all phases of design and construction. Ms. Janopaul oversees all elements of APAH’s real estate development, operations, advocacy, services, and governance. During her tenure, APAH has grown its portfolio to fifteen multifamily rental properties with 1360+ units, valued at almost $250 million with another 800 units in development. APAH is known for its nimble and effective real estate development, for pioneering innovative supportive housing partnerships and its community impact.
Education/Affiliations Ms. Janopaul received a Bachelors of Arts Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University. She serves on the Virginia Housing Development Authority’s Northern Virginia Advisory Committee. She is a past President of HAND, a regional housing association and received the Virginia Housing Coalition’s 2013 Innovations in Leadership award.

J.D. Bondurant, Director of Tax Credit Programs, VHDA
J.D. Bondurant is the Director of Tax Credit Programs for the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA), responsible for the establishment of short and long-term program strategies while developing, directing, and supporting all allocation activities related to Virginia’s Low Income Housing Tax (LIHTC) Program. J.D. has worked in support of VHDA’s strategic and operational planning, as well as state inter-agency housing policy and planning initiatives, for well over a decade. J.D. has a bachelor’s degree from Emory and Henry College and a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Manoj Dalaya, AIA Principal at KGD Architecture specializes in the design of secure corporate buildings as well as interiors and space planning of complex programs where he utilizes a collaborative and research-oriented approach guided by considerations of economics, function, and aesthetics. Important projects attributed to Dalaya include: The Aerospace Corporation, Institute for Defense Analyses, Transurban Operations Center, Computer Associates Incorporated, and Integrity Applications Incorporated. Known for his innovative designs, Dalaya has received numerous national design awards and has written extensively on the built environment. He has presented at He holds a Bachelor of Architecture, Bombay, India; Master’s Degree in Architecture, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio; and MBA George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia.
