(ARLINGTON, Va.) – KGD Architecture received an Award of Excellence from The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Northern Virginia Chapter, for Salutoponics, the firm’s entry in the conceptual/unbuilt architecture category of Design Awards 2018.

The AIA Northern Virginia Chapter Design Awards Program honors members’ design achievements and their commitment to providing design excellence in the built environment. Entry categories include institutional, commercial, residential, historic, and conceptual/unbuilt architecture, as well as commercial interiors and urban design and master planning.

Salutoponics is a conceptual design for a sustainable, multigenerational, and social living environment centered around collaborative hydroponic farming and wetland preservation. Set in East Boston on remediated waterfront and wetlands, the community brings people together in a shared vision of healthy, sustainable living featuring such public programs as a school for urban hydroponic farming, a hydroponic market and café, and a community center. The narrow and economical building footprint is carefully situated on a raised platform to protect the wetlands while promoting resident well-being and their connection to the natural surroundings from balconies on every residential unit and walkways that wrap the entire development.
