What are you most passionate about in architecture?
“I am passionate about the impact that architecture has on people – those that design and build buildings, and those that use them. It is such a collaborative industry that requires input from so many different parties to make it successful. If you have a great team, you want to come to work every day to solve problems and create amazing spaces for people to experience. We also have the opportunity at KGD to work on thoughtful, community-based projects that can touch so many people’s lives and make them better. Seeing a building open and watching people come and use it is something so unique that we as architects are so lucky to experience.”
What are you most proud of in your career?
“I am proud that I have been able to work on so many different project types over the course of my career – spec office buildings, corporate headquarters, multi-family, high-rise, and community/recreation centers. Architecture is a profession that requires constant learning. Every new project tests your skills and your knowledge, and pushes you out of your comfort zone to make you a better architect. It may seem very difficult in the moment, but the next project will be that much easier because you have grown and learned from your mistakes.”
As an associate principal, project director, licensed architect, and someone with 20 years of experience in the industry, what motivates you to strive for more? What are the goals you set for yourself?
“As I mentioned, I am interested in learning more, especially from my peers. I have had the blessing of working with some truly skilled and knowledgeable people over the last 20 years at KGD. Good collaboration in a project team can make or break a project. When you know you have people that you can depend on, it helps you get through the tough days. I strive to be that person for my own team, and to learn from the others that I work with every day (including our partners outside of KGD).”
How would you say you got to where you are now and what advice would you give young women beginning their career?
“I have always had a strong personality since I was young. I wear my heart on my sleeve and have been known to share my emotions (and my facial expressions) openly. I have stayed true to myself and not changed who I am just because I am in a male-dominated profession. There is room for everyone in this industry, and women should not feel like they have to hide their emotions or change who they are to fit in. Being vulnerable is a strength, not a weakness. As long as you have done the work and know your stuff, you should have the confidence to stand your ground and get your point across. Also, there is almost always a woman in your corner willing to support you behind the scenes. Find and support each other.”
As a KGD renowned baker, if you were to describe yourself as one of your desserts what would you be and why?
“What a tough question! I LOVE desserts, so it’s really hard to narrow this down to one. So, let’s go with two.
First, I could be seen as chocolate chip cookie. This is a traditional and reliable dessert that many go for when given the choice. However, if it is not just right (too crisp, not enough chocolate chips, or turned stale) it could throw off your entire meal.
Secondly, I love key lime pie. I have met very few people that don’t like key lime pie. It has just enough tart and sweet to balance out the dessert, with some whipped cream or meringue for extra flair. Yum!”
