In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Institute of Defense Analyses (IDA) is working with Engineers and Architects to identify and implement strategies that reduce the risk of virus transmission and build overall organizational resilience. An architect (KGD Architecture), engineer (ARUP), and an owner (IDA) will review case studies to answer the following questions:

What is the role of the architects and engineers in mitigating the impact of a disaster?

Is there research being done that can be used to adapt buildings and spaces to allow continuity of operations?

Safeguarding the health of occupants is critical but what are the costs?

The design team is proposing an array of resilience-building strategies, including interventions aimed at combatting the spread of infectious diseases. Options under consideration include enhanced filtration, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), humidification control, and increased ventilation. Optional movement included 3D modelling of people to determine space usage to validate plans.
